New York City has never been known as a place where people keep their views to themselves. Not only do New Yorkers speak their minds, they also have a long history of mobilizing around issues they believe in. Activist New York explores New Yorkers´ social activism- past and present- on a wide variety of issues affecting the city, nation, and world.
La ciudad de Nueva York nunca ha sido conocida como un lugar en el que la gente se guarda sus opiniones. No sólo dan voz a sus opiniones, además, tienen una larga historia de movilizaciones en torno a cuestiones en las que creen. Activist New York explora el pasado y presente del activismo social de los neoyorquinos, abarcando una amplia variedad de temas que afectan a la ciudad, la nación y el mundo.
The exhibition tells the story of 14 movements within the galaxy of New York activism, which together give a sense of the scope and variety of the issues that have mobilized New Yorkers over time. They also help us understand that activism does not just take the form of public protests and noisy demonstrations, but can be expressed in art, behind-the-scenes organizing, direct action, political lobbying, publishing, education, fundraising, and a variety of good works. And they ultimately remind us that social activism takes place across the political and social spectrum, with people of good will disagreeing and debating what is best for the city, even as they strive to make it a better place.
La exposición cuenta la historia de 14 movimientos dentro de la galaxia del activismo social de Nueva York, y en conjunto dan una idea del alcance y la variedad de los temas que han movilizado a los neoyorquinos con el tiempo. Además, nos ayudan a entender que el activismo no sólo toma forma de protestas y ruidosas manifestaciones públicas, ya que se puede expresar en forma de arte, acción directa, lobbying político, editoriales, educación, recaudación de fondos… Y en última instancia, nos recuerdan que el activismo social tiene lugar en todo el espectro político y social, con la gente de buena voluntad discutiendo y debatiendo lo que es mejor para la ciudad.
