In June 1835, inventor Samuel F.B Morse was one of the New Yorkers who created the first political party in the nation directed against immigration: the Native American Democratic Association. Made up of American-born Protestant civic leaders, businessmen, and artisans, its aim was to prevent “the overthrow of this Republic” by the growing number of Catholic foreigners entering the city.
