MUSEUM of the CITY of NEW YORK: Hip-Hop Revolution

16.2.16

Hip-hop culture was born on the streets of New York in the early 1970s. At block parties, innovative DJs manipulated vinyl records on a turntable, isolating the rhythmic breakdowns, or “breaks”, giving birth to a new musical art form. Rap entered the mix as MCs added spoken, rhyming lyrics to the DJs beats, and by the early 1980s, the music had travelled from the Bronx and Queens to downtown Manhattan nightclubs.
Meanwhile, young “B-Boys”, or break-beat dancers, were developing a dance style they called “rocking” or “breaking”, which incorporated floor moves and feats of gymnastic and acrobatic skill. And armed with aerosol paint cans, graffiti writers created a visual identity for this evolving urban movement. By the mid-1980s, the four elements of hip-hop- DJings, MCing, B-Boying, and graffiti writing- were represented on the airwaves, in magazines, and on television and theatre screens internationally. Hip hop had established its place in global popular culture.
